Meeting minutes, scrapbook, and newspaper clippings pertaining to G.A.R. J. B. McPherson Post No. 27 from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The collection includes three ledger books containing meeting minutes from 1882 to 1887 (volume 1), 1891 to 1902 (volume 2), and 1907 to 1921 (volume 3). The ledger books also include several newspaper clippings and pamphlets about unit reunions. The scrapbook includes various newspaper clippings about other GAR posts and various unit reunions across the state. Loose newspaper clippings provide additional information about the last remaining members of various posts and their reminiscences of the Civil War. Also included is information pertaining to John J. Downey, a Whitewater, Wisconsin resident who served as a drummer boy during the Civil War. Included are newspaper clippings that provide biographical information and a photograph of an elderly Downey posing while wearing his drum. Downey enlisted at age thirteen with Company D, 16th Wisconsin and was present during the Battle of Shiloh. He eventually was transferred to the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and promoted to drum major. After the war, Downey settled in Whitewater and became active in the Wisconsin GAR, serving as their official drummer.
